The BGTI Thermal imaging system is currently in the final stages of being fitted to over 600 of the British Army’s Warrior and Scimitar Armoured Fighting Vehicles, making it the Fire Control system of choice for the majority of the UK’s Light Armoured Vehicles (LAV’s). BGTI provides not only a day/night Thermal Imaging capability and Laser Rangefinder for the vehicle Commander, it also provides an enhanced vision capability for the Gunner and Driver. This means that Light Armoured Vehicles (LAV’s), which are used in a variety of applications including as a battlefield ambulance, battlefield taxi, infantry fighting vehicle and reconnaissance vehicle, now have the ability to perform these roles in even the most difficult environment and poor visibility.

The laser itself performs no destructive function but, in modern warfare where a laser beam strikes, a variety of countermeasure options are needed. To combat these rapidly proliferating laser threats, Thales has devised a system which can defi ne the threat and automatically deploy a protective smoke screen to cloak a vehicle, while simultaneously alerting the commander and crew to the type and direction of the threat. This gives the commander and crew of the vehicle vital seconds in which to take evasive or aggressive action and thus increases survival probability. A laser warning system is now not just a desirable option but an absolute necessity.

The Compact VEM provides surveillance, target detection and improved Infantry Carrier Vehicle mission capabilities by allowing the troop’s Commander to observe short-range activities during all conditions of daylight, darkness (all ambient light levels), adverse weather, and dirty battlefield conditions. The Compact VEM enhances night-time observation capabilities without the use of active light sources. Used with the optional Compact DVE Display Control Module (DCM), Compact VEM can be a full-function Driver’s Vision Enhancer (DVE). Compact VEM is a real time passive thermal imaging system, operating in the 8 to 12 micrometer spectral region. It converts the scene image composed of infrared energy to an output video signal that can be seen on the Display Control Module.

Elix-IR is the first of Thales’ next generation range of mid IR (3-5μm) Threat Warner systems.

Platform survivability will be significantly increased by the ability of Elix-IR to reliably detect, classify and declare multiple threat events and types. These threats include MANPADS and other guided missiles, RPG and other un-guided missiles and gunfire of all calibres. All threat types are concurrently processed, to enable full integration within the platform defensive aids system (DAS) to give the optimum threat to effect timeline. The DAS may be either a fully integrated system, or a more federated, effector based system such as a Directed IR Counter Measure (DIRCM) or chaff and flare Counter Measures Dispensing System (CMDS e.g. Thales’ Vicon 78).

Thales Land & Joint Systems grenade launchers are mainly used as a self-defence/obscurant device. Designed to be externally mounted on vehicles or turrets, they are controlled and fired from within the vehicle or the turret.

The 66mm grenade launchers are available as single pots or in four, five or six pot clusters. The single pots can be individually mounted or platform-mounted to meet customer specific arcs of fire requirements. The 66mm grenade launchers are compatible with all current 66mm munitions; Smoke Screening, CS Gas, Anti-Personnel, Visual IR and Practice.
